There’s something about deep cleaning your home that gives it this refreshed airy feeling. Dusting and polishing neglected surfaces seems to breathe new life into them once again.
The bedroom is one of those rooms that’s often disregarded. We tend to focus on parts of the home that guests actually see. So, it’s important to take some time out for deep cleaning the bedroom.
I’m going to share a bedroom cleaning plan that you can use. There’s also a free printable available that you can download and add to your home management binder.

1. Gather Your Cleaning Supplies
Round up all the cleaning products you’ll use to clean your room. You will need:
- Trash bag
- Box or basket to collect items that belong elsewhere
- Micro-fiber cleaning cloths
- Lysol wipes
- Long-handled duster
- Furniture polish
- Glass cleaner
- Vacuum cleaner
- Mop and bucket
- Air freshener
- Dust mask or a clean scarf (I like to use these to prevent me from sneezing fits as I clean. Just fold the scarf in a triangle and tie it around the back of your head so it covers your nose and mouth. It works just as well as the dust mask. You may look like a bandit but those dust bunnies should be quivering in their boots anyway.)
2. Declutter The Bedroom
Tidy the bedroom by picking up clutter off surfaces. Fold and put away clean clothing. Throw dirty clothes into the hamper.
Collect items that don’t belong to the bedroom and place them in the box or basket. When you’re done cleaning, take them to their rightful homes. Also, remove anything from the room that you no longer love or use. If it’s in good condition, place it in the box for donation and if it’s broken or worn, add it to the garbage.
3. Remove Trash
Empty the trash into the garbage bag and wash the bin with hot soapy water. Rinse and set it aside to dry. In the future, keep the trash can clean by lining it with a plastic bag.
4. Remove Linens
Strip the bed and take down the curtains. Launder the sheets and curtains while you finish cleaning. If they can not be washed, set them aside to be taken to the dry cleaner.
5. Dust and Polish Furniture
Remove picture frames from the walls. Begin dusting the room from top to bottom, working in one direction all the way around. Clean the ceiling, crown molding, light fixtures, ceiling fan, around the windows, walls, corners and baseboards. Use a long-handled duster for hard to reach areas.
Clean picture frames using the micro-fiber cloth. After dusting, spray glass cleaner onto the cloth and wipe the glass in the frames. Rehang them.
Wipe the windows and mirrors with glass cleaner and a cloth. Then, clean any other glass surfaces and decorative items in the room. Remove lamp shades and clean the bulb and base of each.
Use Lysol wipes or a damp cloth to clean light switches and door handles.
Finally, use another micro-fiber cloth and furniture polish to clean the wooden furniture. (Try this homemade furniture polish recipe.)
6. Clean the Mattress
Follow these instructions to clean, deodorize and care your mattress.
7. Clean the Floors
If there’s no carpet present, mop and then, vacuum. If you do have carpets, sprinkle baking soda onto them and let it sit for a few hours to absorb funky smells. Then, use your vacuum to remove it and any dust.
Be sure to clean under and behind furniture, if you can. Use the crevice tool on the vacuum cleaner to remove any build-up of dust along the baseboards.

8. The Final Touches
Replace the trash can, hang curtains and make the bed. Spray the room with air freshener.
Now, that you’re done deep cleaning your bedroom, grab the box or basket with items to be taken to other rooms. Place them where they belong and stash items to be donated in your car so you don’t forget them.
