I’ll be the first to raise my hand and admit that I love a clean house but I don’t love the time and effort needed to get it that way. And why does it seem that just as I’ve finished cleaning, someone comes along and creates a mess again? It’s a never-ending cycle!
I’m sure you can relate.

Get Organized
One of the best ways to reduce the amount of time you spend cleaning is to get rid of clutter. When your home is filled with junk, you have to move things around just to access the area you want to clean. Plus, there’s more to dust.
Purge your home. Clean out each closet and get rid of paper clutter. Go through room by room and remove anything you don’t use or love.
Donate or sell things you’re getting rid of that are still in good condition. Dump any broken or worn items.
Think about how you use each space and determine how best to organize it. Consider the habits and personalities of each person that uses the space and create organization systems that are simple to use and maintain.
Clean Up After Yourself
As you get ready in the morning, put your makeup and hair tools back. Place dirty laundry in the hamper at night instead of dropping clothes on the floor. Wash up dishes during cooking instead of leaving a big pile to tackle at once. Make your kids put away their toys each night.
If there’s a spill, clean it up right away. Not only does this help to avoid stains, it’s usually easier to clean up a fresh mess than one you’ve left there forever. You also avoid pests if it’s food or drink.
Get into the habit of putting things away and tidying up as you go, rather than having to come back and do it later. Make sure your entire family adopts this attitude as well.
Prevent Messes Before They Even Happen
Sometimes, a mess could have been avoided or, at the very least, contained. There are many ways to do this around your home.
Make sure your family and pets only eat in certain areas like the kitchen and dining room. Wash your kids’ hands (and faces) as soon as they’re done so they don’t touch anything with dirty hands.
Another easy way to prevent a mess before it happens is to place door mats at every entrance. While you’re walking outside, you pick up any number of things on your shoes. Door mats protect your floors as you can wipe your shoes and feet off before you bring dirt or anything else into the home.
Enforce a “no shoes” policy indoors. Ask visitors to remove theirs as well. Put a sign up by the door if you feel weird about doing this but it’s your house.
Use Quality Cleaning Supplies
Ever used cleaning products that just weren’t getting the job done? A stain remover that stains just laughed at or a vacuum cleaner that had poor suction leaving all the dirt behind.
Using the wrong supplies means you spend more time scrubbing and cleaning. Invest in high quality cleaning tools and products to get a clean house faster.
There are some tools that even do the cleaning for you. Enter the robot vacuum cleaner e.g. iRobot Roomba. Simply switch it on and walk away. You’ll have a clean house in no time and you didn’t have to lift a finger! Talk about a time saver!
Make Cleaning Supplies Accessible
Gather all of your cleaning supplies in one main area like the laundry room so you know where everything is. Keep them in a caddy so you can easily move them from one place to the next while you’re cleaning.
Alternatively, store cleaning products in readily accessible areas around the home e.g under the sink in the kitchen and bathrooms. That way, you can grab just the right cleaning supplies for the particular job as needed.
Daily Cleaning
Spend 5-15 minutes cleaning your home every day. You may be surprised just how much you can do in such a short amount of time.
Tidy up frequently used rooms e.g kitchen and living areas or pick a different area each day and clean that.
Cleaning in short spurts means deep cleaning will be a whole lot easier when you get around to it. Your home won’t be as dirty as if you didn’t clean on a regular basis. Also, when visitors drop by giving you little notice of their arrival, you won’t have to do a mad dash to speed clean before they get there.
Work Smart
When you’re cleaning, work your way from one end of the room to the next and from top to bottom. That way, you’re not dirtying an area you already cleaned. After you’re done, vacuum up any dust and dirt on the floor.
Limit Distractions
Put your cell phone away and turn off the TV. Answering messages or checking email will make the process of cleaning take way longer than it needs to.
Get Help
The best way to save time cleaning is to get help. Delegate chores to your family so you’re not doing it all on your own. You don’t make all the mess so it’s only fair that you’re not the only one cleaning, right?
You can also consider hiring help if it’s in your budget. Housekeeping services can be just the answer you need if you and your family are too busy to maintain a clean house.
Cleaning can be time-consuming. Hopefully, with these tips, you’ll shave some time off how long it takes you to get things done.
