Finding time to organize is simpler than you might think. Use the free printable and these simple ideas to declutter your home even when you’re busy.
You wake up in the morning and before long, it’s chaos.
You’re making breakfast which would go a lot smoother if you could just find the spatula you need to flip the eggs. Then, you’re running after your kids trying to get them ready for school but where’s the homework they did last night? And of course, as you’re leaving, you realize you can’t find your keys for the third time this week!
Sounds familiar?
You know that having an organized home can save you a lot of time. But, why is it that finding the time to organize is such a challenge in itself?
You’re already so busy, how are you going to set aside time to declutter… anything?
Well, here are five ways to find the time to organize your home even when you’re super busy.
How To Find Time To Organize
1. Make An Organizing List
If you’re rolling your eyes, thinking that I’m asking you to organize your organization, hear me out!
You need to know what you even want to organize in order to get it done. The best way to do that is to create a simple list. Below, you’ll find a list of organizing tasks you can tackle or make your own list by writing down what you want to declutter and organize room-by-room.
Hang the list somewhere you can see it everyday so it serves as a reminder. Cross off tasks as you complete them. This is half the fun of having a list. The other half is actually knowing you’ve got one less thing to do!

2. Hyperfocus
Select one small area of your home and concentrate on organizing only that space. It’s so easy to be overwhelmed by clutter. You’ll end up doing nothing at all when you think about decluttering too much at once.
Instead of thinking you need to organize the whole kitchen, focus on just the cupboard under the sink or only organize your junk drawer. This seems a lot more manageable than the entire room, doesn’t it? Now, you’re one cupboard or drawer closer to your goal. Hey, it’s better than no progress at all!
3. Squeeze It In
Organize as you’re doing things around the house. This is actually really easy.
While waiting for the water to boil so you can cook the pasta for dinner, sort through your utensils drawer. Every morning, when you do your makeup, throw out any expired products you find and set aside ones you don’t use or love.
As you look into your closet or drawers to get dressed, remove any clothing you come across that:
- No longer fits
- You don’t like
- Is out of style
- Is not in good condition i.e. torn or stained.
When you think about it, I’m sure you can come up with a lot of other ways you can purge while puttering around the house.
Keep a donation box next to your front door and anytime you find something you no longer need or want (that’s still in good condition), throw it in the box. When the box is full, take it to the nearest charity or thrift store. Discard badly worn or damaged items.
This is a good way to organize areas you frequently access. Places like your store-room or items you don’t reach for often will take a bit more effort to purge.
4. Shop At Home
When you’re struggling to find time to organize, don’t get hung up on having the perfect organizer for a specific task. Find something in your home that you can use to corral items right away. Use cheap organizing hacks like empty boxes, cans (washed and dried), Ziploc bags, recycled baskets or old Tupperware containers as storage bins.
What’s really important is first organizing your home. After you have completed an entire space or room, then you can purchase just the right organizer. You’ll have a much better idea of what you need then anyway.
5. Don’t Strive For Perfection
I know you have images of homes with neatly arranged pillows and no toys anywhere in sight burned into your mind. It’s hard not to! You see these kinds of homes in magazines, on T.V and even on social media.
But, keep one thing in mind—those houses are staged. No-one’s home is really perfect all of the time especially if you have kids running around. So, if you stop yourself from doing things because you think it won’t be perfect, it’s time to let that go.
You should be aiming for a house that suits your life—where it’s easy to find the things you need and there are organization systems that make every room function better for you. Don’t aim for what you think your house should look like.
Remember, once an area or room is clean and tidy, then make it pretty. You’ve already gotten the hardest part done.
Finding time to organize when you’re busy is never easy but these five simple steps should help.
