Holiday decorations are great. They really add to the festive mood of whatever season comes around and make your home look pretty. Who doesn’t love that?
On the other hand, with so many holidays each year, you may have a ton of ornaments and baubles lying around your home. The problem is what to do with them when they’re not in use?
I’m going to give you some simple ideas for how to organize seasonal decor.

Purge
The first step of organizing is always to purge. Go through all of your holiday decorations and find anything that fits the following:
- It’s broken
- It no longer works e.g. lights or decorations that play music or move
- You don’t find it attractive anymore
- You never use it
If an item is broken or does not work anymore, throw it in the trash. Other things that are in good shape but you just don’t like them or they dump glitter everywhere and you never use them, donate to someone else.

Sort Seasonal Decorations
The next step is to sort what you have left into broad categories. Separate each season e.g. Christmas and Easter decorations. Then, create different groups within each season. Grab a pen and some Post-It notes. Write down the headings you will use.
Here’s a list of categories to get you started:
- Indoor and Outdoor
- Lights
- Ornaments
- Artificial Christmas tree, wreaths and garlands
- Tinsel
- Nativity Scenes and other free-standing decorations
- Candles
- Miscellaneous
After you have all of your holiday decorations separated into their respective groups, note on the Post-It the approximate quantity or length of items like light strands. This will help you to get the right size and number of containers for storage.
Organize Holiday Decor
Now you need to consider what storage options you will use to store your holiday decorations. I suggest purchasing sturdy, waterproof and pest-proof storage containers that can stack easily. This way they will take up as little space as possible.
Make sure you get the right storage solutions for your needs. There are plenty of options for ornament storage. Also, if your ornaments are breakable, be sure to get rigid containers with dividers to protect them as much as you can.
Christmas tree storage bags and wreath storage containers are the perfect way to protect your tree and wreaths from dust. Sick of tangled lights every year? Then, you need Christmas lights storage reels and cord wind ups.
Don’t forget about tucking away your gift wrap and other seasonal things like bows, bags, cards and ribbon. These gift wrap storage solutions are awesome. I have seen people DIY similar storage solutions using garment bags and shoe organizers.
Avoid overstuffed boxes. Each container should have plenty of room and the contents should be packaged properly to prevent breakage.

Label Storage Containers
Even if you store your holiday decorations into see-through containers, it’s still a good idea to label everything. When you have boxes stacked up on top each other, it may be difficult to see what’s inside.
Print labels with a label maker or write them onto cute tags like these. Print or write the holiday or season, as well as, the contents of the box e.g. Christmas ornaments or Fall wreath. I personally prefer to stick a label at the top and one of the sides of each storage container. Then, place the storage box with at least one of the labels facing out.

Store Holiday Decorations
The final thing you need to decide is where in your home will you store all of your seasonal decorations. You need a place that is:
- Dry
- Protected from extreme heat or cold
- Free of rodents and pests
- Large enough to house all of your decor in one area so you can find everything when you need to
- Out-of-the-way e.g. a shelf in the garage, in a closet or shed. Don’t place the boxes in front of or on top of anything you will need regular access to.
When it comes to holiday decorations, I go for the “less is more” approach. You don’t need to fill every nook and cranny of your home with seasonal decor but if that’s your thing, go for it! Just make sure you have the space to store everything when you’re done.
Hopefully these simple tips will help you figure out the organization and storage of your holiday decorations.
