Part of the fun of organizing your home is selecting pretty organizers. (At least, it’s fun for me!) The problem is individual organizers can be pricey. Add in the fact that you’ll need plenty for each room in your home… Ouch!
It’s definitely possible to corral the stuff in your house on a budget. But, before you look for organization solutions, my first recommendation is to purge and get rid of as much stuff as possible. It makes no sense finding a place to store things that are broken or items you don’t use or even like.
Below you’ll find a list of DIY organization hacks that you can use to store everything you plan to keep. Best of all, most of the ideas in this list are items you probably already own so there’s no need to go out and buy them.
Here’s to saving money while still getting organized!

15 DIY Organization Hacks
1. Shoe boxes
Use shoe boxes as drawer dividers instead of manufactured ones. You can even customize them to fit your drawers by cutting them down to size.
Don’t like the mismatched look? Cover them with paper so they all look the same.
2. Empty Boxes
Storage baskets and bins can be expensive so use an empty box to store your stuff. I’m sure when you look around your home, you’ll find plenty of these because a lot of items you purchase come in boxes—cereal, tea, appliances, etc.
Take a big box, cut it in half, if necessary, and cover it with paper so it coordinates with your decor. Then, you can use these in pretty much the same way as any storage basket or bin.
3.Tension Rod
Place a tension rod under the sink in the kitchen and bathroom. Use S-hooks to hang baskets or just hang spray bottles and other items with handles that can hook directly onto the bar. This is a great solution for maximizing tight spaces.
4. Glass Jars
Glass jars without their lids can be great for storing pens, makeup brushes or even kitchen utensils. Alternatively, you can keep the lids on and store smaller items like hairpins.
Create you own organization system for hardware supplies e.g. nails or craft supplies e.g. beads. Glue the tops of each jar lid to the bottom of a shelf. Fill the jar and screw it into the lid. Bonus: you can easily see the contents of each jar.
5. Ice Cube Trays
Use ice-cube trays to corral small pieces of jewelry e.g. earrings and rings or stationery like paper clips in the office drawer. They are free if you just use ones you already have at home or really cheap, if you decide to buy them and they come in a ton of colors!
If the ones you have at home are not your ideal color, a simple coat of spray paint can fix that.
6. Tins
Empty tin cans are great for organizing small items such as your kid’s art supplies—crayons, markers, pencils and paintbrushes.
Remove the label, rinse the can and paint or leave the silver finish, if you prefer.
7. Picture Frame With Glass Insert
Find an old picture frame at home or buy one from the thrift store. Clean the glass thoroughly with rubbing alcohol. Insert a plain piece of fabric or paper into the frame and replace the glass.
You have just made your very own dry erase board. Simply write notes on the glass with dry erase markers.
This is a perfect solution for keeping track of groceries that have run out or jotting down quick notes to family members.
8. Picture Frame Without Glass Insert
Remove the glass from a picture frame and attach small Command hooks to the front of the backing board inside the frame. If you already own a frame with a cracked glass insert, that would be perfect for this as well.
Hang the frame on a wall close to the entry door and use it to organize your keys. You’ll never lose them again!
9. Bowls
Find a spare bowl at home or one that is chipped. Use it to corral small essentials by the entry e.g. your keys, sunglasses and cell phone.
10. Gift Baskets
Received an awesome gift basket for a special occasion? Don’t throw out the basket the goodies came in! Repurpose it to store toilet paper in the bathroom or anything else you can think of in your home.
11. Pegboard
Pegboard is a great organizing solution for lots of items. Try using it in the garage to sort tools and garden supplies. Hang small baskets or individual items on it.
12. A Hanger
A simple hanger from your closet can be used to hang multiple belts, scarves, ties, even jewelry and sunglasses on it. The possibilities are endless.
13. Coffee Mugs
For some reason, we always seem to have a ton of coffee mugs. How many does one family need?
Take a few of those mugs and store pens in them or whatever you like. This is a good way to use the chipped ones instead of throwing them out.
14. Muffin Tin
Is it just me who can’t seem to keep a muffin tin that doesn’t eventually rust? Obviously, once it’s started to show signs of rust, I get a little wary of using it to make yummy muffins.
If this has happened to you, spray paint the tray and place it in a drawer to store small items such as hair ties.
15. Butter Containers
After you have used up all the butter, wipe the inside of the container as clean as possible. (Feel free to use some bread for this.) Jokes aside… Wash the empty container and lid with warm soapy water. Dry, then use it to store whatever you like. My mother loves using butter containers to keep leftovers in the refrigerator but you can use them anywhere in your home.
If you won’t be putting food in the containers, try painting the outside to complement your decor. Adhere labels so you know exactly what the contents are.
