1. Make Your Bed
Lying down on rumpled sheets drives me crazy! I know exactly how the princess in the Princess and the Pea fairy tale felt.
I need to smooth out wrinkles in my sheets before getting totally comfortable.
Lucky you, if you don’t have that problem.
The bed is usually the focal point in the bedroom and it’s such a large piece that it’s important it’s tidy in order for the rest of the room to look good.
So, ensure you make your bed every morning.
Straighten the sheets, fluff and arrange the pillows nicely and fold back the blanket or duvet, if you have them. I don’t bother with throw pillows at the moment but, if you have them, put them up front to add a little pizzazz to the bed.
2. Put Your Clothes Away
After changing out of your clothes, either hang them back in your closet, if they’re clean enough or throw them in the laundry hamper. Don’t dump them on the floor or over the back of a chair.
Put away your clean laundry where it belongs in the closet or drawers. Leaving it sitting somewhere in a corner just makes your room look untidy.
3. Don’t Clutter Flat Surfaces
The top of your dresser or nightstands shouldn’t be cluttered with stuff. Only leave essential items on your nightstand e.g. a lamp or a box of tissues.
If you find that these areas become clutter hotspots for you, try putting something pretty on top like a small plant to signal that they are not dumping grounds.
4. Purge and Get Rid of Junk
When you have too much stuff, you’ll have a hard time storing it and keeping it tidy.
Declutter your bedroom and get rid of anything that you don’t like and use regularly.
Pare down your wardrobe to free up more space in your closet and drawers. Donate or discard items that you no longer need or want.
5. Give Everything A Home
If you don’t know where to put something, you’ll put it down anywhere. Soon, you’ll find your bedroom is a cluttered mess.
So, to combat this, give everything a home. It doesn’t matter how small the item is, you should have a specific spot for it.
6. Maximize Storage Space
Bedrooms don’t always come with a lot of storage space especially if you have a small room.
It’s hard to keep your room clean, when you lack space to store items properly. Remember, everything needs to have a home.
If you struggle with this particular problem, add some storage. Here are some ideas:
- Utilize the space under the bed. The bed takes up a lot of space and underneath is usually wasted real estate. Purchase some under-the-bed storage containers and stash your belongings inside.
- Get a storage headboard. A storage headboard is great place to put lots of smaller items like books and things you might need while in bed. If you don’t have space for night stands, this is a good alternative.
- Add shelving. Install a shelf above the top closet rod for additional storage space and anywhere else that shelves might make sense for you.
- Doors are great for storage. Hang an over-the-door organizer to corral small items.
7. Don’t Wear Shoes In Your Room
If you wear shoes in the house, they can leave behind traces of dirt, not to mention, lots of germs.
Avoid wearing shoes inside your room, especially if you have carpet or rugs in there.
8. Don’t Eat In The Bedroom
When you eat, you may drop crumbs leaving your bed and floor dirty. Also, you may be tempted to leave wrappers, plates or glasses behind.
Not only does this leave your room looking untidy, this practice can entice critters seeking food.
Enjoy your meals in other areas of the house like the dining room or eat-in kitchen.
Here are more reasons why you shouldn’t eat in bed.
9. Tidy Up After Yourself
After you finish doing anything really, you should always clean up after yourself. Put everything you used back where it belongs and wipe off any surfaces you may have dirtied.
Here are a few daily bedroom cleaning tips:
- After you get dressed, put hangers somewhere neatly.
- Close drawers and closet doors.
- If you put on makeup or do your hair in the bedroom, put away supplies or tools you used.
- Clean up any spills right away.
When you get into the habit of doing these tasks, you make life so much easier for yourself. You’ll know exactly where things are because they’re back in their rightful spots.
10. Keep A Trash Can In The Room
Having a small trash can in your bedroom makes it easy to get rid of garbage. You should always have one with a liner on the inside to help keep it clean.
11. Clean Your Room Regularly
Vacuum the bedroom floors, launder the sheets and dust surfaces weekly.
Deep clean your bedroom at least a few times per year. During this time, clean the mattress, change curtains and do a more intense clean.
Make sure to get spots you don’t tend to during your weekly routine e.g. baseboards, artwork, under and behind large furniture pieces.
