1. Shelves
Add extra storage space to your closet by installing shelves above the hanging rod. This gives you a place to add baskets or store luggage etc.
If you have a closet with shelves that are spaced too far apart, add more shelves between the existing ones. This video shows you how:
2. Under Shelf Storage Baskets
Now that you have lots of shelf space, get even more use out of it with under shelf storage baskets. These storage baskets clip on to the shelf. No drilling or tools needed.
3. Shelf Dividers
It can be challenging to store items on a shelf. Often, stacks of stuff simply fall over and create a mess. Shelf dividers prevent this and keep everything separate and upright.
4. Hanging Rod
Install a second hanging rod below the first one. You may need to raise the bar that’s already in there to give your clothes enough clearance but this will double the hanging space you have.
5. Tension Rods
Tension rods are great for fitting into tight areas that would otherwise be wasted space. You can use them to store shoes, hang clothes and just about anything else you can think of.
6. Hooks
Hang items on the back of the closet door using over-the-door hooks or racks. This could be a good spot for one or two bulkier items like coats or items you reach for frequently e.g. your everyday handbag.
Place S hooks over a hanger to store bags, belts or even jewelry.
Screw cup hooks into the wall for extra hanging space.
7. Plastic Shoe Organizer
An over-the-door plastic shoe organizer is an affordable way to maximize vertical space on a blank wall or the back of the closet door.
Don’t just use them for shoe storage. You can put all sorts of things in those babies— jewelry, rolled scarves etc.
Here are some handy ways to use these organizers:
8. Shower Curtain Hooks
Storing scarves can be a bit of a pain if you’re a true scarf lover and you own a ton. Short of purchasing scarf hangers, shower curtains rings could be just the answer you’re looking for. Simply hang a bunch of them on one hanger or directly on the hanging bar itself.
Another idea for scarf storage is to wrap the scarves on a hanger or bar. Fold the scarf in half. Drape the folded scarf over the bar, pull the ends through the loop where you folded it in half and pull tight. The scarf will sit neatly on the bar and can easily be removed when you want to wear it later.

9. Out-of-Season Clothing Storage Idea
If you’re storing luggage in your closet, why not put it to work? Place out-of-season clothes inside to maximize space for clothes that are in season. Put the luggage on a shelf up high, hang it from the walls or store it under the bed.
Vacuum storage bags are another amazing way to store seasonal clothes and bulky items e.g. blankets. Put the clothes inside and suck the air out of the bag using a vacuum cleaner. It’s incredible how much space you’ll save using these.
10. Use A Filing System
Instead of stacking folded clothes inside drawers on top of each other, stack them vertically like a filing system just like the video below shows:
11. Storage Bins and Baskets
Place smaller items in storage bins and baskets. You can store so much more stuff when you pack things into a basket instead of on their own. You can even put baskets inside drawers and use them as drawer dividers.
12. Donation Box
Put an empty box in the corner of your closet for donations. Whenever you find an item that fits the first four criteria below, put it in the donation box:
- It doesn’t fit
- It’s out of style
- You no longer like it
- You never wear it
- If an item is torn, stained or stretched out, throw it away
If a task is convenient, you’re more likely to do it. So, having this box right in your closet for donations means it will be super easy to purge your closet and have more room for items you actually love.
13. Garment Rack
Even after you pimp out your closet to make the most out of the space you have, it might not be enough for your needs. Let’s face it, there are some tiny closets out there.
If you’re faced with this situation, try a garment rack to give you the extra room you need for hanging clothes. You can use this to create a capsule wardrobe or simply to keep your favorite pieces up front and center.
