Decorating a home can be pretty expensive and it’s difficult to know where to spend your money. Instinctively, you want to pour money into areas that guests will see like the kitchen and bathrooms but what about the master bedroom? This room should be pretty high on your list because you spend a lot of time there.
The master bedroom should be a cozy retreat—some place that you look forward to going for long periods of time. Just because guests don’t see it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be equally as important as a space that they will.
But how do you know what to spend money on when furnishing this room? It would be nice if money wasn’t an issue and you could get anything you wanted no matter the price but that isn’t the case for most people. So, I’m going to talk about where you should save and where to splurge in the master bedroom.

Where To Spend Your Money In The Master Bedroom
First, let’s talk about the items you should splurge on:
Bed Frame, Mattress and Pillows
The bed is the most important item in the master bedroom. It’s where you sleep, where you rest when you’re sick and where you seek solace after a bad day. It’s also the place where you snuggle with your significant other and kids.
Your mattress and pillows must be comfortable and should offer good support. Get quality ones that will last a long time and not leave you with an aching back or neck every morning.
I always advocate that you use the under-the-bed space for storage especially if you have a small master bedroom. The area underneath the bed is superb for stashing stuff. Invest in a bed frame with drawers so you can easily tuck things away in them.
Since the bed is the largest piece of furniture in the whole room, your eye is immediately drawn to it. Get a frame and headboard that make a statement and reflect your style.
Sheets and Duvet Cover
Who wants to lie down on scratchy sheets that make you sweat in your sleep? Life’s too short for that and you deserve better!
Invest in good quality 100% Egyptian, Pima or Supima cotton sheets. Make sure they reflect your style and blend with your decor.
Types of fabric and thread counts can all be a bit overwhelming, so here’s a guide to buying sheets.
Area Rugs
Now, you may or may not want an area rug in your room but if you do, invest in a good one.
A rug is not something you change out frequently so get one that will last a long time. You don’t want a rug that will shed or feel uncomfortable under your feet.
Original Artwork
If you’re an art lover, then spend some money on at least one piece of original art. Paintings and photographs can really set a mood. Find something that speaks to you and your personal taste and gives the feeling that you want to evoke in the room.
Professional Paint Job
I left this one till last because it can really go either way. You can choose to splurge or save on the paint job.
Paint itself is pretty cheap but labour generally isn’t. Despite this, I would highly recommend getting a professional especially if you have a room with very high ceilings or lots of angles and molding that would be tricky to paint.
There’s nothing worse than having a nicely decorated room with a poor paint job. It just ruins the overall effect you were trying to achieve.
If you choose to DIY this part of the room decor, take the time to do it properly. Cover the floor, remove light switch plates and outlet covers. Use painters tape to protect all the surfaces you don’t want to paint over like baseboards. Ask for tips at your local hardware store to make sure you do it right.
Now, let’s delve into the areas where you should save in the master bedroom:
Lighting
Just like artwork, lighting can help to set a particular mood in the bedroom but you don’t necessarily need to spend a fortune on it. You can find great looking lamps and light fixtures at affordable prices in-store and online.
Having a lamp on your bedside table is nice if you like to read in bed before you go to sleep. It’s a good way to control the lighting without affecting the other person in the room too much.
Night Stands and Dressers
Bedside tables and dressers are also key pieces in the master bedroom provided you have space for them. However, you can find lots of high quality affordable options so there’s no need to splurge on these.
Chair
An empty corner of the bedroom is the perfect spot for a chair. Find a comfy chair at an economical price point and drape a blanket over it. Just don’t let it become an area where clutter builds up.
Throw Pillows
You may be one of those people who love to add throw pillows to their bed. These little cushions do add flare and increase the coziness factor in the master bedroom but there’s no reason to spend a ton on them. Have one or two and switch them out seasonally.
Curtains and Drapes
I have curtains and love the privacy they offer and that they also add a layer of softness to the room. However, they’re not lined so they’re not great for blocking out light. In the morning, the sun streamed straight into my face. It was quite a rude awakening.
I got creative, went to the fabric store and bought blackout fabric. Then, I whipped up my own blackout panel without taking time to sew it. I simply folded down one end of the fabric and hot glued it into place. Then, I put it on a separate curtain rod behind the original curtain panel that was already there. Bye bye, sun!
Of course, you can purchase drapes that already have the blackout fabric included but I had so many curtains already, I just wanted something that could work with what I had.
Trends
My personal taste has always leaned more toward classic pieces that never go out of style. When you’re budget-conscious, spending money on trendy items is a waste as the trends are usually over in the blink of an eye.
Of course, there are ways you can add the style of the moment to your room, if you really want to, without spending too much. A great way to do this is with smaller decorative items that are easy to swap out e.g. throw pillows and other decorative pieces. If green is popular, you’ll surely find a bunch of green throw pillow covers at any home decor store. If rose gold is trendy, it will be easy to get your hands on items in this metallic finish or at the very least, a can of spray paint in this colour.

Knowing where to save and where to splurge in the master bedroom is key when you’re budgeting. In the end, you’ll have a dreamy well-designed space where you can catch up on your sleep.
