12 Ways To Save Money On New Appliances

As long as you have a home, you need appliances. I don’t know about you but I’ve never been inside a house that didn’t at least have a fridge.

You don’t just rely on appliances, they also offer convenience. For example, when you have a washing machine, you don’t have to lug your dirty laundry to a laundromat and some refrigerators do a whole lot more than preventing food spoilage these days.

The problem is larger appliances can be so expensive! Whether you’re on a budget or you just like to save money—’cause really, who doesn’t—paying full price for big-ticket items may not be an option.

Sales are an obvious way to reduce the amount of money you spend on appliances. If you can, wait until stores drop their prices and then pounce on the deals. Many shops have sales around major holidays so hold off on your purchases until then.

2. Bundle Deals

Sometimes you can get a cheaper price if you buy more than one appliance at the same time. Retailers often bundle appliances to encourage customers to buy. A washer and dryer combo is a perfect example of this type of special offer.

3. Older Models

Need to save money on a new appliance? Then, try last year’s model. Stores drop the price of older models so they can clear space for newer ones. This can be a source of huge savings for you. Sometimes, there’s no major difference in the models at all so you won’t be missing out on anything.

4. Slightly Damaged Appliances

If an appliance has a minor flaw like a tiny scratch or dent, the retailer decreases the sale price. So, the next time you’re shopping, ask if there’s a damaged section that you can take a look at. My brother got his refrigerator at a HUGE discount and it only had one teeny dent that you don’t even see. These superficial flaws don’t affect the function of the appliance at all, so take advantage!

Do you care that your new appliance doesn’t come in a cardboard box if it means you’re getting a ton of money off? I sure wouldn’t!

It’s hard to go appliance shopping and not get carried away by all the bells and whistles. I swear some day soon, there will be a stove that can cook my food and tie my laces. Every year, there are more and more features being added.

Those fancy features also increase the price though. So, think about what features you really need before you go shopping and write a list. Stick to that list and pay only for what you will use, not for all the extras.

7. Shop Around

Different stores will have different prices of the same exact item. Shop around and check out the prices of various retailers before you settle and buy.

8. Negotiate A Better Price

At local appliance stores, you may be able to negotiate a cheaper price for yourself. Even if the sales associate is unable to lower the price, they may be able to offer cheaper or free shipping and installation or take away your old appliance. This will definitely save you big bucks. 9. Trade In

Some stores may allow you to trade in your old appliances. This is a great way to save money on new ones so check and see if there are any shops in your area that offer this service. Then, find out how much your old appliance is worth.

10. Sell Your Old Appliances

Instead of trading in your appliance, you can sell it yourself as long as it’s still in good condition. Create a listing online or in a local newspaper, then once it’s sold, use the money you earned to offset the cost of the new one.

Even if your appliance is not working, you may still be able to sell parts of it to a repair shop or scrap metal business.

11. Pay With Cash

Large appliances are not cheap. (That’s kind of the point of this whole post.) It can be tempting to use your credit card or to utilize a store payment plan. If you can, avoid this temptation. Save the money and pay cash. You’ll avoid interest rates and ultimately paying a higher price than if you just made a one-off payment.

12. Buy Used

My final tip for how to save money on new appliances is not to buy new at all. Maybe just get something used that is newer than what you own. You can find plenty of second-hand options online and even at local appliance shops.

Just know that you will probably need to cover the pickup, delivery and installation of the appliance you’ve bought, plus a fee for hauling away your old one. Keep all these costs in mind when you calculate the total price to see if it’s worth it.
