If you have a small house with a tiny kitchen, then you need space-saving ideas to maximize storage. Here are some simple tips for how to organize a small kitchen and make it look good.
The kitchen is the hub of the home. It’s the place where everyone gathers, tasty meals are cooked and family memories are created.
Unfortunately, not all of us are blessed with a huge kitchen. When you have a space that’s barely big enough for one person to turn around in, organizing it can be a challenge.
A well organized kitchen, not only functions more effectively, it also encourages you to actually want to cook in it. More home-cooked meals mean less eating out so ultimately, you will save money.
But never fear, I’m going to tell you how to organize a tiny kitchen while still making your space look good.

Think Vertically
In real estate, when space is limited, what do you do? Build high rises.
So, in a small kitchen where space is precious, if you can’t organize horizontally, utilize vertical space. Hang kitchen utensils on walls and even attach pots to the ceiling using a pot rack.
Cabinet and counter shelf organizers add additional storage space to pre-existing shelves. These are great for mugs, cans and just about anything else you can think of.
Fasten organizers or Command hooks to the inside of cupboard doors, the sides of cabinets and the underside of shelves. Hang small or lightweight items like oven mitts or utensils. Use sturdier hooks for heavy items like cutting boards.
Purchase items that easily stack. All of my plates, saucers, bowls and mugs neatly stack into a plate rack and require very little space. My food storage containers are all the same shape. They fit neatly inside one another and the lids sit on top.
Declutter Kitchen Cabinets and Drawers
Recently, I organized my mother’s kitchen and discarded twelve mugs. Twelve! There are still plenty left for a family of four living in the house. This just goes to show that too often we accumulate items that we can do without.
Go through your kitchen and see what you have lurking in there that you can get rid of. Remove duplicates, discard anything that’s not in good condition and donate or sell the rest.
Use Multi-purpose Kitchen Gadgets and Furniture
After you’ve decluttered your kitchen, only purchase items you absolutely need. Find items that are multi-purpose for example, a can-opener and bottle opener combination.
If you have an eat-in kitchen, consider placing a storage bench along one or two walls instead of chairs. These seat the same number of people and you have a place to put bulky, less-used items like a stand mixer and all the attachments. Make the benches cozy with pretty cushions.
Another idea is to add a mobile kitchen island with storage space. This is a great place to stash cook books or whatever you like. It also provides an extra surface for chopping and food preparation. You can easily move it out-of-the-way when you need to.
Think Outside The Box
In a tiny kitchen, you need to get the biggest bang for your buck. Use clever storage solutions for small spaces to help you make the most of every nook and cranny that’s available to you.
A Lazy Susan can help you utilize tight corners in cupboards or make groceries more accessible in the refrigerator and kitchen pantry. There are multi-tiered ones that maximize the space.
Storage bins are great for keeping items that might otherwise take up a lot of room. I use them to corral snacks and pasta.
You can also use storage containers to disguise anything that’s not particularly pretty to look at and to make it easier to access individual items in high places. For instance, store paper towel rolls in baskets on the top shelf of your pantry to avoid an avalanche when you attempt to remove one.
Collapsible bins are good options when you’re short on space. In the event that you don’t need them, fold them and tuck them away.
Kitchen Storage Tips
Consider location when deciding where to store things in the kitchen. Place items close to the area where they will be used. Keep saucepans and cooking utensils in close proximity to the stove. Place glasses near to the refrigerator.
Keep frequently used items handy. Put them at the front of cupboards instead of the back, on easily accessible shelves instead of too high or low. This minimizes the effort involved in getting what you really need.
Group similar items together and label the shelves and storage bins so your family can easily find what they are looking for. They will also know where to put items back.
Being able to easily find and access things you need will save you time in the kitchen.
Color Scheme
Sticking to a particular color scheme makes a small kitchen look a lot more cohesive.
When I designed my kitchen, I stuck to neutral hues like black, white and silver/ grey. Then, I added one main accent color—red. My kitchen towels and oven mitts also add a hint of olive-green because my apartment is one open space and that color is present in my living room cushions.
I used clear containers and baskets whenever possible so that they did not take up too much visual space. Click here for more home organization secrets.
