Vases are an absolute necessity in the Springtime. Flowers are blooming and bringing those colourful blossoms indoors is a great way to instantly brighten up your home.
Instead of buying vases, I’m going to show you three insanely easy and cheap ways to make your own. Each of these ideas are upcycled which makes them even more worth it.

3 D.I.Y Decorative Vases
I have placed a materials list before each of the three projects with links to materials for your convenience.
Upcycled Glass Jar Vase
For this project you will need the following:
- an empty glass jar, washed clean and dried
- yarn
- scissors
- E6000 glue (I used UHU all-purpose glue because I had that on-hand)
- Goo Gone, optional
Instructions
- The first idea for our vases requires an empty glass jar. I left the label on my jar but you may be able to see the outline of the label when the jar is held up to light. If this bothers you, remove the label from the jar using some Goo Gone.
- Use any glue that bonds to both porous and non-porous material and dries clear. I used UHU all-purpose glue instead of a hot glue gun because I didn’t care to burn my fingers throughout this entire project and I had it on hand. You can use E6000.
- Starting at the bottom of the jar, apply a thin line of glue.
- Stick the yarn to the glue and wrap it around the bottom edge.
- Continue to apply thin lines of glue in short sections and wrap the yarn making sure you push each new row tightly against the previous one.
- After you have completed wrapping your jar, cut the excess yarn and be sure to secure the end to the jar.
The first of our vases is complete. Fill it with decorative stones and fresh or faux flowers and you’re in business.
As you can see in the photo, I wrapped mine three-quarters of the way up so the stones would be exposed. I also used a multi-coloured yarn for a fun effect.
Upcycled Wine Bottle Vase
For this project you will need the following:
- an empty wine bottle, washed clean and dried
- Jute twine
- scissors
- E6000 glue
- Goo Gone, optional
Instructions
The process to make this wine bottle vase is exactly the same as the instructions given for the jar. The Jute twine is much more opaque a material than yarn so I didn’t have any issues with my label showing through because of course, I was too lazy to remove it. If you want to, you can go ahead and get rid of yours using Goo Gone.
Wrap the entire bottle, three-quarters of it or just the middle section. Try wrapping multiple bottles in those three different ways for a set of vases. Use your imagination and creativity here. Just remember, the more bottles you wrap, the more wine you’ll need to drink. (Never a bad thing, right?)
Add some decorative twigs and flowers to the wine bottle vase. Another option is to leave it empty and use it as decoration on a shelf.
Upcycled Tin Vase
The third idea is by far the simplest of the vases to make. For this project you will need:
- an empty tin can, washed clean and dried with lid completely removed
- spray paint, optional
Instructions
- Remove the label from the empty can.
- Spray paint the can or leave it plain. It’s totally up to you! I left mine plain as the silver colour worked well with my decor.
- Add some flowers and boom! You are done!
Did I not say this was the easiest of the vases? I love the contrast of the gleaming metal against the flowers. It just makes me happy.
These three ideas for vases do not require a lot of skill and best of all, they are cheap! You will also be helping the environment because each of them uses recycled materials.
