Do you love saving money? I’m sure the answer to that question is a resounding “Yes!”, ’cause really, who doesn’t?
A great way to save is by having a no-spend weekend which is exactly what it sounds like—a weekend when you don’t spend a cent.
Now, if you’re sitting there wondering what you will do for an entire weekend if you can’t spend money, I’ve got you covered. Here is a list of 20 activities that you can do during a money-free weekend. (You’re welcome.)
20 Free Things To Do During A No-Spend Weekend
1. Community Events
Check online or your local newspaper and you are bound to find lots of free and interesting community events. Pick one (or a few) and enjoy!
2. Board or Card Games
Every family has a few board games, or at least a deck of cards, lying around the house. Get them out and have a family game night.
3. Watch Movies Or TV Series
Watch a movie or binge-watch a TV series on Netflix. This is a great way to spend any weekend, in my opinion, but a rainy or cold one is particularly nice.
4. Invite Friends Over For Coffee
Who says you have to go out? Invite your friends over and serve them cups of coffee (or tea, if they prefer). Take it a step further by having yummy coffee additions on hand like sweetened condensed milk or cinnamon-infused simple syrup.

5. Potluck
Host a potluck and make your dish using ingredients you have in your fridge and pantry. Everyone else will bring a dish and before you know it, you’ll have a whole buffet in your home. No better way to spend a weekend than eating some good food.
6. Hike or Bike
Go on a hiking or bike trail and maybe, take a camera with you. Snap some nice pics when you reach a scenic point or just commit the view to memory if you don’t want to bring a camera. Either way, you’ll get some exercise and fresh air.
7. Crafts
Break out the crafting supplies and exercise your creativity. Make gifts for upcoming special occasions like birthdays or even something for yourself or your home. Knitting, crochet, jewelry-making, soap-making… There are so many crafts you can try.
8. Sports
If you enjoy playing sports, then a no-spend weekend is a great time to get sweaty. Even if you don’t regularly play a sport, all you need is a ball to get busy. Play at the neighbourhood community centre or at a park with some friends.
9. Read
When you’re engrossed in a good book, time just flies by so quickly. Go to your local library and borrow some books there for free. Return home, put on some comfy clothes and curl up in a chair with your book.
10. Declutter and Organize
What better way to enjoy a no-spend weekend than to declutter your home? I bet you can think of a thousand other ways, right? Don’t break out the pitchforks just yet. After you have a pile of items to get rid of, separate them into three groups: donate, trash and sell. Your next step is to…
11. Have A Yard Sale or Garage Sale
See? I told you to have a little faith. All of those items that are still in good condition, sell at a yard sale. Having a sale is an awesome way to make some extra cash. You can put this money towards building your emergency fund, making an extra payment for a loan or add it to your savings.
12. Go To The Beach
This is one of my favourite activities. It’s fun and also, very relaxing. If you live near a beach, take advantage! Soak up the sun, take a swim or play beach volleyball with some friends.
13. Puzzles
Puzzles can be quite engaging and fun. Try a jigsaw puzzle, crossword, Sudoku, whatever you like.
14. Take A Class
Check local stores to see if they offer free classes. Participate in a cooking class at a cooking institution or take a DIY class at the hardware store.
15. Go To The Park
Take your kids or fur baby, a.k.a your dog, to the park and play with them. You will all have a blast. Bonus, if you take your kids out, they will return home exhausted and will sleep soundly that night. Win-win, right?
16. Talk
I feel like no-one does this anymore. The actual act of having a conversation with another person who is physically present. We’re always on our phones or other electronic devices, chatting via WhatsApp and leaving comments on social media. But, how often do you sit down and just talk. No TV or other distractions. A good old-fashioned conversation. Try it sometime. You might like it.
17. Garden
A no-spend weekend can be a great time to spruce up your garden. Plant new flowers or pull some weeds. Don’t have space for an outdoor garden? No problem! Place some potted plants in a sunny window and you’re good to go.
18. Write
Write in a journal, pen a short story or draft a letter to give your kids when they get older. Writing can be fun and allow you to express things you would ordinarily feel uncomfortable saying out loud.
19. Volunteer
Give back to others and volunteer. Help a local charity with a fund-raiser or offer your time to another worthy cause.
20. Relax
The best thing to do during a no-spend weekend is to just relax. Take naps, give yourself a mani-pedi or get a massage from your significant other. You’ll be well-rested when the weekend is over and you deserve it!
